Pacific Legislature Hearing on HIV and ICT

The special Pacific Legislatures Hearing on HIV and ICT, convened by the Regional Secretariat of the Pacific Legislatures for Population and Governance (PLPG) and Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), was opened today by Hon Deputy Speaker of Cook Islands Parliament. The Hearing is supported by the HIV & STI Section, Public Health Division as well as the Pacific ICT Outreach Programme, Economic Development Division of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community and focuses on two distinct components – The fight against HIV and use of ICT as a key tool for sustainable development. The Hearing brings together legislators who are currently serving or intending to serve as Champions in a) advocacy for the prevention of HIV or b) promoting ICT as a tool for development.
Australian MPs visit to Tonga Parliament

A parliamentary delegation from the Australian Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters today called on the Hon. Speaker of Parliament Lord Lasike.
The four member delegation is headed by Australian Labour Party MP Hon Allan Griffin. Other MPs include Senator Helen Polley a Senator for Tasmania, MP for the Australian Capital Senator Gary Humphries Territory and Delegation Secretary Ms Samantha Mannette.
A statement from the Australia High Commission Office in Nuku’alofa say the main purpose of the tour is to examine the effectiveness of Australia’s engagement in the Asia Pacific region Tonga included in providing governance and electoral support.
Building ICT capacity of staff of the Legislative Assembly of Samoa

Tuesday 9 August 2011, Secretariat of the Pacific Community, Suva, Fiji – Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) held a training workshop in Samoa from 1–5 August 2011 to strengthen the ICT capacity of staff of the Legislative Assembly of Samoa.
The training, conducted by staff of SPC's Pacific Information and Communication Technology Outreach programme, was part of an European Union-funded project titled 'Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Access for the Poor: Improving access to ICT by informing and engaging Pacific ACP Legislators'.
